Puppy Massage!
I have a confession. Yesterday was the first day I took Mia for a walk in about… oooh.. a few weeks. I feel bad. I’m a terrible catdeerdog mama. My little girl loves, and I mean LOVES her walks. But you guys, it’s been so effin’ cold. And as you know, my little girl IS a Chihuahua. She’s a lover of the heat and the sun.. not so much of the cold and the gloom.
So, what to do when those of us live in certain areas of the world where winter throws herself upon us? Well, sometimes we bundle up and walk quite briskly. After all, a walk is important for a dog, no matter the breed or size. Yes, even Chihuahuas and other toy breeds need walks. It’s not only good for physical exercise but also mental stimulation, bonding and obedience training.
Of course, there are those times when it’s well below freezing and our little part of the earth is covered in ice and snow. Well then, we ain’t walkin’ those days, people.
What do we do then? I work from home, and I can see that Mia is bored and needs mental stimulation.
Well, we have a selection of toys to choose from… the new red puppy toy is named Patch. Yes, I name her toys, and she learns the names very quickly. :)

Maybe she has TOO many toys though.

It’s quite amusing to see her play with a tennis ball.. she is quite often very cat-like.

And per our New Year’s goals for the year, we decided to do some fun training. Mia didn’t come into my life until she was over a year old, and she had some issues adjusting to being… well, a dog. She was frightened of everything and everyone, didn’t know how to walk on a leash and wasn’t really house-trained. The biggest issue I noticed though was that it seemed like she didn’t receive much love or attention in her early puppyhood, so I obviously still make up for it by spoiling her incessantly.

Occasionally though, I crack the whip and make her hit the books and learn something new. ;)

Our most recent accomplishment is loose leash walking by my side or even a little behind me. I used to allow her to walk ahead of me and roam and stop wherever she wanted, but I nipped that in the bud to try to get a better handle on her behavioral issues with other dogs. She picked that up after one session, and now we both get more exercise walking a steady, brisk pace.
Although, training her can be quite a challenge sometimes with her short attention span.
She wistfully looks out the window willing it to be warmer so we could go for a walk instead of posing for pictures.

So, I bought a hula hoop the other day to begin our ‘jump through a hoop’ training! I often think if she had the proper training as a puppy, she would have been a natural at canine agility courses. There has to be some Jack Russell in her… certain characteristics comes out quite often when she plays. :) She’ll be seven years old in June, but she still acts like a puppy. She’s actually quite a fast runner too.. I’d love to see her run with a Greyhound or even an Italian Greyhound. I often call her my little ninja because she is so very light on her feet. Jumping is no problem for her. She often leaps into the air onto my lap or across the sofa from a standing position.
Obviously, she still gets a little skittish of weird, inanimate objects she’s never interacted with, but we started slow. I first coaxed her to just walk through the hoop while I held it on the floor. We’ve only been working on this for about 10 to 15 minutes for a couple days, so treats are involved at this stage, of course. And, we always end on a positive note. Sometimes, I wedge the hoop in the doorway of my office to make it easier for both of us to concentrate.
Here you can see she’s waiting and speculating. I can just see her thinking, “Will the hoop stay in place and not fall on me if I crawl under it?” There are times she tries to figure out alternate routes still, but like I said, it’s only been a couple days.

And look at her go! She’s doing great so far! This is not the best picture though.. I had to do some photoshopping to sharpen her. I was trying to coax her through and snap a picture at the same time. She was too fast for me, but you get the idea.

That’s my baby girl! I ♥ her so much. She’s so freakin’ smart… the attention span of a goldfish, yes. ;) But damn, she’s smart and a quick learner.
So there you have it. We’re having fun.. she gets treats and mental stimulation as well some exercise. I get to help her blossom even more into the smart, awesome little dog I know she is. We’ll keep practicing. If all goes well and she gets really good at it, I’ll take video. My ultimate goal would be to create a little agility course for her! *fingers crossed*
It looks like it’s gonna be a warm weekend (mostly rainy but still 60s!) in the Columbus, Ohio area, so get out there and play with your pups!
Have a great weekend!

Can dogs have New Year’s resolutions? I say “Why Not!?” At any rate, I helped Mia to make a couple goals for the year. ;)
Mia is to ~
Here’s to an exciting 2013 filled with love, yummy treats, cozy blankets, playtime and lots of snuggle time.

”It’s difficult being a thug princess. I work damn hard to be this effin’ cute.”
~Mia
If you recall, I talked briefly about setting up another site for non-dog photos and such. Well, I finally got around to doing just that. Yippee! I pulled in some old blog posts from here, and I still have to post a portfolio of some of my images. It’s gettin’ there.
So, The CatDeerDog Blog is officially Mia’s world. What other pups she allows into her domain is absolutely up to her discretion (oh is it ever… ). ;)
We’ll mostly be talking dog stuff and sharing dog photos here now. If you’re not interested in keeping up with us, no hard feelings.. well, not on my part. Mia, on the other hand, she’ll most likely snub you and hold a grudge.
If you’re interested in other areas of my photography endeavors, my personal life and/or my thoughts on variety of subjects where I undoubtedly can’t keep my opinionated mouth shut, then pop on over and visit me at Snap Madly.
Until next time, Mia and I wish you a Happy Tuesday!

A little over three years ago, Mia and I invaded Cameron’s life. And subsequently, we stole some her daddy’s attention away from her. Before that, there were random visits where Mia and I would stay for a little while, but we would always go home. And Cammie would get her daddy back. But in August of 2009, Mia and I didn’t go home.
It was tough going at first bringing together our two baby girls.. both very stubborn and used to being the alpha dog.. the only dog - two dogs that definitively defined ‘small dog syndrome’ in their own obstinate ways. In the beginning, there were a lot of fights.. some of them quite scary.
Eventually, we pulled through the rocky start of blending together our families. Once Mia established dominance in the household.. or maybe it was really Cammie just saying, “Alright. Go ahead.. whatever.” all the while thinking to herself: “I’ll get you, my pretty.” .. they learned to live peacefully with each other.
Mostly.
Mia may have secured the alpha dog reins, but Cammie was smart and manipulative. She knew how to push Mia’s buttons. She knew how to get a rise out of Mia and in doing so, she could get what she wanted.. Mia’s bed, Mia’s spot on the couch, Mia’s blanket… Sometimes, I think Cammie would start some shit just for the pure fun of it. And at times, it could be highly entertaining watching this interaction. It quickly became their thing.

As time went on, these two little dogs, complete opposites in not only appearance but personality, became friends and teachers. Cammie brought out Mia’s stronger side. She became more confident and fearless as long as Cammie was by her side helping her along and instigating the battle cry throughout the neighborhood. In turn, Cammie learned the fine art of doggie yoga (nothing like a good stretch after a good night’s sleep) and how to vocalize her happiness when greeting her humans by attempting to say, “hello”.
They played, they let the neighborhood know what. was. up., they snuggled and comforted each other, and they both worried at vet visits when the doctors poked and prodded the other. At some point, they became not unlike sisters who squabbled and bickered but who were also best friends who depended on each other.

Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Cammie today. She became much weaker and had a way more difficult time breathing over the weekend. Doctors were never able to give us an official diagnosis on why she became anemic. Her immune system was either attacking her red blood cells, which is medically named Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) or the most likely scenario since medication was not helping is that her body just decided to stop making red blood cells. It happens. And unfortunately, aside from blood transfusions for a temporary, painstaking fix, there is nothing that can be done about it.
Let me tell ya something. This fucking sucks. After all we’ve been through.. after all Kevin has been through the past couple months losing his mother and his grandfather.. to lose Cammie too just puts the ‘dig the knife in a littler deeper’ icing on top of life’s fuck you cake for 2012.
So yeah, I’m pissed. I’m angry. I’m upset.
And I think I have the right to be all of the above. Life is shitting on my family, and I don’t like it one bit.
I’m also an emotional wreck.
I’m going to miss Cammie’s little wiggly butt when she was happy to see us. I’m going to miss her incessant barking. I’m going to miss her insanely accurate internal clock. How else am I going to know when dinner time is? I’m going to miss those fat, little feet.

Kevin and I are incredibly heartbroken. If you have or had a dog, you surely know the feeling. These little animals are our children. We love them, we take care of them, and they provide us with their undying devotion and unconditional love. We are a mess. If you don’t know what it’s like and you see us break down for no apparent reason, you may think our reaction or behavior is silly. Just trust me and know that there is no feeling similar to that of losing a beloved dog and loyal companion.
We love you, Cammie, and we’re going to miss you so much. ♥

Hello all! It’s been a while, but it’s also been quite a hectic few weeks…er.. months really if we want to be honest here. I wrote about my mother-in-law passing away a few weeks ago. Two weeks to the day after Kevin’s mom passed away, his grandpa (his mom’s dad) also passed away. So yeah.. it’s been rough.
Around when all this was happening, our dachshund, Cammie, had started not eating as much, which is unheard of for her. When she did eat, her stomach seemed to succumb to nausea most of the time and purged itself of its contents. We took her in for a checkup and discovered she was and still is severely anemic. After a handful of visits, lots of poking and prodding, many tests and several hundred dollars later, doctors still don’t know why she’s anemic. We’ve been referred to specialists at OSU and have an appointment with them tomorrow morning.
We hate seeing one of our baby girls without that energy and spark in her eye and worse yet is the helpless feeling of not being able to do anything about it. :( Needless to say, we could use some good vibes sent our way big time.
Aside from visits to the vet and a Sunday trip to the Dawes Arboretum with Kevin, I remained home as much as possible during the week with Cammie and Mia. The pups and I had mornings where we didn’t want to get out of our cozy, warm bed, and I inadvertently cut my bangs a tad short which is not a big deal really. I purposefully did the same thing this time last year for my Cleopatra Halloween costume. Maybe I’ll do Bettie Page this year? Although, I’m thinking this is it.. after almost 17 years of staying with short to medium length hair, I’m gonna try to grow it out long again. I try this once a year and fail miserably.. but I’m doing it this time! Ha.

Speaking of Halloween, Kevin and I are both happy our favorite season is here! We would have loved to have gone out and enjoyed it a little more this past weekend, but we also wanted to be home with Cammie. So instead, we got a jump start on the pumpkin carving. We mostly just wanted to roast some pumpkin seeds. I LOVE pumpkin seeds. And for the first time, I decided to do something with those pumpkin guts we usually toss out and made pumpkin gut bread… not too shabby. I’d recommend adding more pumpkin guts though per loaf to obtain more pockets of yummy pumpkin gooeyness.
My sweet husband also indulged my childlike tendencies this past weekend by buying me a little 5 gallon zen aquarium. I love it! We’re apparently totally breaking some feng shui laws here and disrupting some good chi energies by putting it in the kitchen, but whatever.. I like having it on the dining table. It’s helping us to keep the table from being a dumping ground of random stuff, and maybe we’ll eat at the table more. So, that’s good feng shui, in my opinion. (Please disregard my old, ratty, wrinkly placemats. I’ve been meaning to replace them for.. oh, I don’t know.. a couple years now!?)

Meet Eeyore, named as such because he seemed totally depressed yesterday like he wasn’t digging his new home.

We got him some neon tetra housemates today though and got him all pumped up by seeing his reflection. Maybe he needed to defend his space by that “other” male betta? At any rate, he seems happier today.

And yes, Kevin and I are so intuitive we know how our fish is feeling. But seriously, he’s been wagging those pretty blue fins at us a lot more this evening.

Hope you all have a great week, and we appreciate any puppy prayers you can send our way! ♥
So, I finally caved last week and made a doctor’s appointment (which is today) to see what the hell I did to my foot. I think I have an idea, but as much as I’d like to think I’m so super smart sometimes, I’m also not a doctor. And sometimes, not very smart.
It’s only been a few days since I took Mia for a walk (which I had to cut short because of pain), and I’m already getting disappointed looks from her.
Her world is ending if she doesn’t get to walk EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
Pretty soon, she’s gonna snub me altogether and head out on her own with a little puppy knapsack on a stick. I imagine it will be filled with treats, only the good lamb bits from the dog food, her stuffed friend toy, Turtle and little shiny things and credit cards she’s ninja swiped (true story!).

Thankfully, we haven’t gotten to that point yet. Her current plan of attack usually involves protesting in her own puppy way by lounging out in the yard and ignoring me.
Yeesh. And you think your life is hard.
Hope y’all are having a better Monday than Mia! ♥
Last week, I showed you a picture of Miss Ella…

She seemed to enjoy herself at The Powell Village Winery event, Pups On The Patio. I also hope she is enjoying her new home!

I also got up close and personal with a few other awesome dogs. There was so much excitement, so forgive me if I’m mixing up names or misspelling them here. I obviously had some wine and was having a lot fun taking pictures of all the pups! This is Buster with the pretty eyes…

…and a picture-perfect pose…

Sophie was a real cutie and looks a little like Chewbacca.. :)

Happy Pug! And I feel so bad because I can’t remember this little one’s name.

But what an awesome serious face…

I fell in love with Henry! He’s 5 1/2 months old and a bundle of energy! This image of Henry is not as sharp as I would like it to be (his face is slightly fuzzy), but I had to share one of him. He’s too insanely cute!

Brody was very excited to be visiting a winery…

…as was his brother, Jack.

Absolutely adorable!

I recently watched an online workshop about pet photography. The photographer’s style was mostly studio, and she highly emphasized posed photos. Yes, for pets! And it seemed like she was making so much more work for herself. I much prefer on location and photographing dogs in their natural element doing their own thing…being dogs! Or dogs acting like humans! ;) I think you’ll get better pet photos (dogs will be much more relaxed as well!) if you don’t try to force them so much and just let ‘em be.
Miss Elphaba (Elphie, for short!) was a total sweetheart.

And the winner of best ears of the evening: Diggy! I loved how that one ear just popped up all the time.

Sooo much fun! I love dogs.
Happy Monday, folks! ♥
I went to The Powell Village Winery last night for their Pups On The Patio event. Wine and dogs. Could it get any better!? You get to sit out on the lovely patio, enjoy some delicious wine and bring along your pup to enjoy a bowl of fine water, puppy-approved treats, socializing and lots of lovin’ and ear scratchin’ from dog lovers like me.

I snapped a few photos of the cutest winery patrons ever which I will share with you more later, but that above cutie is Ella. She came with a crew from PAWS: The Powell Animal Welfare Society, a foster-based dog rescue located in Powell, Ohio. The winery donates a portion of their proceeds from the evening to the society! Seriously…best winery ever. And good news for Ella! She gets to go to her new home on Sunday. ♥
Stay tuned for more cute pup pics!
